Since 1995, the Sacramento Physicians' Initiative to Reach out, Innovate and Teach (SPIRIT) program of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society (SSVMS) has worked to increase access to specialty healthcare for underserved residents of our region. The SPIRIT program addresses the healthcare needs of our community’s most vulnerable patients, thereby reducing the strain on hospital emergency services.
Step 1 | A medical home refers uninsured, low-income patients for specialty care - specialty consults and/or outpatient surgeries. Step 2 | SPIRIT provides case management and care coordination allowing volunteers to donate services with minimal disruption to their office. Step 3 | SPIRIT volunteer physicians provide specialty consults in their private office or at the Sacramento County Primary Care Clinic. The referring medical home provides follow-up care. Step 4 | Outpatient surgeries are performed at participating surgery centers or hospitals where all of the supporting services are also donated.
SPIRIT is always accepting volunteer applications from specialty physicians. Whether you are interested in providing specialty services in your private office, or surgical services at a partner hospital or surgery center, SPIRIT makes it easy for you to give back to the community by coordinating volunteer schedules and providing case management services.
