SSV Medical Society News - 2020 - Volume 9 - Issue 03 MEDICAL SOCIETY NEWS Volume 9, Issue 3 March 2020 The Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society is dedicated to bringing together physicians from all modes of practice to promote the art and science of quality medical care and to enhance the physical and mental health of our entire community. Protect Access to Quality Health Care - Oppose the Costly MICRA Measure Dear Colleagues, This fall, California voters will be asked to vote on a new ballot measure that would drive up health care costs, restrict access to care for low-income patients and decimate the protections afforded to patients across California as part of the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). This initiative, bankrolled with millions of dollars from an Iowa-based trial attorney, would effectively eliminate the cap on non-medical damage awards in malpractice cases, substantially raising health care costs for all Californians, while allowing attorneys to collect unlimited fees from medical malpractice awards. SSVMS and CMA have joined Californians to Protect Patients and Contain Health Care Costs, a broad coalition of physicians, dentists, nurses, hospitals, safety net clinics, and other health care providers, to oppose this initiative. Together, we are vigorously fighting this initiative in order to protect access to quality health care for Californians across the state. For more information on this dangerous initiative, click here. To join the campaign, please visit www.ProtectMICRA.org. John Wiesenfarth, MD President, Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society COVID-19 Resource Page CMA has created a webpage that features the latest links and updates from the CA Dept of Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, American Medical Association and more, including new billing guidelines: www.cmadocs.org/covid-19 Click here to download a flier that can be posted in physician offices or clinics or handed out to patients.
