PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Dangers of AB 1751

A huge, huge thank you to everyone who participated in CMA’s Legislative Advocacy Day this past month! SSVMS’s 40+ member delegation included practicing physicians, residents, and medical students.

Six of the CMA priority bills successfully passed through their policy committee and await hearings from the budgetary committees, while another passed through the full State Assembly and is awaiting action in the State Senate.

However, some dangerous bills have also advanced. SB 784 would allow any health care district to be eligible for a permanent exemption from the corporate bar. This can set up a disastrous precedent for physicians and patients across the state when a hospital district is unable to come to a negotiated contract with physicians. This undermines long-standing patient protections, which provide patients with the peace of mind that when they see a doctor, the doctor is focused on their care, not the profits or interests of their employers. 

SB 784 has passed through two Senate committees with no opposition thus far. It will be heard in the Senate Appropriation Committee on Monday, May 8th (tomorrow) at 10:00am.

Act on this legislation now by contacting your state legislators and informing them of the dangers of SB 784.
